Secure Board Communication
Many boards still send sensitive internal governance communications via insecure communication channels. A recent report from Diligent Corporation found that 56 percent of directors use their personal email for communications with the board, and even C-level executives and governance professionals also do this. This is a serious risk that must be addressed.
It is essential to get board members on board with the need for secure communications. This involves educating them about the reasons why their current practices expose them to data breaches and helping them comprehend how much it can cost in terms of lost time, cyberattacks and compliance violations.
Cybercriminals are attracted by boards because they have access to sensitive information that is important to them. Hackers often target high-profile individuals like board directors and C-level executives due to their access to sensitive information that is of importance to them. This makes them a good target for ransomware attacks, in which criminals threaten to release confidential information unless they get a payment.
To prevent this, the board should look into adopting a governance platform that replaces text and email messages with a secured record system that utilizes encrypted data transmission and a specially-built mobile application. This will eliminate the need to share confidential or private information through unsecure email or document systems controlled by the organization’s IT teams. It also provides an independent platform that will allow boards to continue to lead in times of crises.
